Recycling Center

The Recycling Center on Lee Road is the central receiving and processing facility for recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum and glass. The center is managed by Morale, Welfare and Recreation as the base of operations for recycling these items.

The processing plant, Learning Center, drive-by drop-off, military drop-off and recycling operations center are located at the center. There is a pick-up service provided through the operations center on a case by case basis. There are two trailers provided by the center that are rotated weekly throughout the installation to collect materials for recycling. The center also has bins for cardboard situated at 22 locations on post, including dining facilities, clubs and Army and Air Force Exchange Service facilities. The bins are emptied weekly.
Information concerning locations and schedules is available at the center.

Nearly 2.050 tons of material were recycled at the center between October,1993, and December, 1995, including 1,772 tons of paper (including cardboard),17.5 tons of aluminum and 44 tons of glass. Between January, 1996, and December,1998, the center anticipates processing nearly 3,000 tons of paper products alone.

During fiscal years 1994 and 1995, Fort Jackson recycled approximately 20 percent of its trash.

The Recycling Center is situated, equipped and operated to optimize recovery of material with salvage value for recycling. With your commitment to recycle and our commitment to service, we can increase revenue, decrease disposal costs and improve the efficiency of the recycling Center operations.

Unit Drop-Off:

Military units take an active part in recycling here at Fort Jackson. The Military Unit Drop-Off area at the Recycling Center is designed to be self- service. Here are a few suggestions to help your unit do its part in recycling:

Units designate a specific area in their offices as a collection point for paper (white ledger, mixed colored, newsprint, green-bar computer paper and magazines), cardboard and aluminum cans.

After collecting and separating recyclable materials, the unit representative can drive right into the rear of the Recycling Center for drop-off.
Sorted materials should be weighed and placed into designated containers. Be sure to weigh your empty container and subtract the weight from your product total.

Look for your unit binder on the record center desk and enter the weights of the materials brought in for recycling.

Make sure all materials have been weighed and emptied. The hours for unit drop-off are Monday and Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information on how your unit can participate in recycling, call 751-4208.

Drive-Through Drop-Off:

Recycling is made easy at the Recycling Center. It is open 24 hours a day for drive-through drop-off. Doors in the side of the building are clearly labeled for each of the following recyclable items:

Newspaper

Magazines

Plastic (all numbers)

Aluminum cans

Glass (green, clear and brown)

Cardboard/Brown paper bags

Plastic, glass and aluminum items should be rinsed and the lids should be removed. Plastic and aluminum items should be crushed. All items should be separated into the proper categories listed on the doors.

Items that are not acceptable at the Fort Jackson Recycling Center are envelopes, carbon paper and other sensitized paper, blueprint paper, film and photographs, miscellaneous (cups, lunch bags, wax paper) and metal objects such as spiral binders and fasteners.

GLASS

Glass never wears out. It is 100 percent recyclable, which means it never has to reach a landfill. Instead of throwing your glass away as trash, take all your glass containers to the Fort Jackson Recycling Center. Glass food and beverage containers should be separated by color: clear, brown, and green.

Items that are not acceptable are mirrors, ceramic cups and plates, clay flower pots, light bulbs, crystal, automotive and window glass, heat-resistant oven ware and drinking glasses.

PLASTIC

Americans discard at least $120 million worth of milk jugs, butter tubs and other plastics each year. Recycled plastic can receive new life by being turned into fiber fill for a ski jacket, a paint brush handle or even a park bench.

You can help reduce the amount of plastic in landfills by dropping off your recyclable plastic. Plastic with numbers 1 through 7 are accepted. The recycling symbols can be found on the bottom of plastic containers and they should be separated as follows:

#1 PETE -- All plastic beverage containers (soft drink bottles, spring
water)

#2 HDPE -- Natural -- Non-colored containers (milk jugs, ammonia bottles)

#3 HDPE --Colored -- All other plastic containers with symbols #3 through
#7

All containers should be rinsed, have the lids removed, and be crushed.

Learning Center:

Recycling and environmental awareness on Fort Jackson is a way of life. Recycling is a distinctive program where the entire community works together for a common cause. To stress the importance of recycling, a Learning Center, constructed primarily from recycled material, has been designed to teach children of the community about recycling.

The first of its kind in the Army, the Learning Center is designed to be an interactive tool for the post and local schools to inform students about the solid waste programs, to emphasize the importance of recycling and to show how to conserve Nature`s resources instead of putting trash in landfills.

Fort Jackson realized that it is never to early to stress the importance of recycling; hence, the Learning Center was created. On- and off-post
organizations joined forces with the MWR staff to develop and construct the center. Displays, a classroom and a creative play structure are the center`s major features. The displays demonstrate the processes used to turn trash into raw materials or new products, the way in which plastic is turned into fibers for carpeting and other products, and more. The play structure, built from recycled plastic, lumber and cardboard, makes learning fun for children. The classroom is set up for local children in kindergarten through 8th grade to take a field trip through the land of recycled products. It will stimulate their minds and give them ideas on how they can actively recycle at home and at school.

The Learning Center represents Fort Jackson`s commitment to maintaining a high quality life for future generations, which includes environmental aware-ness. The Learning Center is open to all on- and off-post schools by reservation.
