AWOL Reporting Procedures

If a soldier is recognized by his/her unit as being AWOL the following actions will take place:

When a soldier appears to be missing without justifiable cause, commanders will determine if the soldier can be found or if subordinate supervisors have authorized the absence.  When it is evident that the soldier has departed without authorization, the Military Police will be notified at 751-3113/3114.  When calling, the reporting individual should provide information on the missing soldier such as description, hometown, personal vehicle (if appropriate), and date, time and location where the soldier was last seen.  When AWOL reporting requirements have been met (missing for 24 hours), commanders will conduct a more complete inquiry using DA Form 4384, Commander’s Report of Inquiry/Unauthorized Absence as a guide.

Commander's must submit the following to the DES AWOL Apprehension Officer when a soldier is absent after 24 hours:

1) DA Form 4384 (contact the above listed phone number to receive this document)
2) DA Form 4187
3) DA Form 268
4) Personnel Data Sheet

Desertion Reporting Procedures

When a soldier has been AWOL for 30 consecutive days, commanders will prepare a DD Form 553, (Deserter/Absentee Wanted by the Armed Forces) and submit to the Provost Marshal AWOL Apprehension Section.  Military Police will annotate the form with a control number and return the form to the commander for submission through AG to the US Army Deserter Information Point.
