What is the Training Support and Schools Directorate (TSSD)?

We exist to help determine the best ways to train in Initial Military Training (IMT). We are part of the Deputy Commanding General for IMT staff located with the Fort Jackson Army Training Center where we have been historically and with better access to IMT units and the US Army Drill Sergeant School.

We are a multi-discipline organization that has many experts across the training spectrum. We have many seasoned personnel in our proponents who are experts in IMT. We have research experts and the Army's Physical Readiness Division. We have the Leadership Development Division (formerly Victory University) that also has many experienced professionals who teach the new senior cadre arriving for IMT assignments in TRADOC. We also look at knowledge management and lessons learned for IMT.

Our goal is the help the DCG-IMT make the best training and operating decisions for the over 150,000 new Soldiers that enter the Army every year for the Active, Reserve, and National Guard components.

The TSSD will develop, refine, and support Basic Combat Training (BCT) and required aspects of Initial Military Training (IMT) across TRADOC through doctrine, education, research, training support, knowledge management, and act as the proponent for BCT, Drill Sergeant Program, IET Reception, IET Leader Education and Training (Victory University) Courses, Army Physical Readiness, and Warrior Transition Course (WTC) to ensure BCT is as effective and world class as possible. Achieve outcomes from strategic and critical thinking that determine the right tasks, drills, and support for BCT. On order, perform duties as directed by the Commanding General of the BCT Center of Excellence and DCG-IMT.

COL Joseph Coleman is the Director of the Training Support and Schools Directorate. He commanded a Basic Combat Training Battalion and has extensive experience in Initial Military Training.
